Environment: Our Major concern

Complexe

Preservation of the environment is one of the permanent and major concern of our company. It is omnipresent in all of its activities and operations. Environmental and sustainable development is also an essential component of our development strategy.

Our environmental commitment :

-  Meet the regulatory requirements of our business

-  Improve the quality of our products

-  Manage the risks and impacts of our activities on the environment to prevent any kind of pollution

-  Use natural resources rationally and economically

-  Implement  human, material and technical means necessary for sustainable development and environment protection

-  Ensure staff  awareness to contribute to improving continuously the company’s environmental performances

-  Establish relationships based on trust and respect with local residents, local community and local authorities.

In order to meet this commitment, SAMIR has invested in a proactive approach to improve its environmental performance through the modernization of equipments, the use of new technologies, the optimization of  operations and  management of these method processes.

We are working hard for the permanent reduction of the gaseous effluent discharges associated with our activities. Meanwhile we develop and market products (fuels, lubricants…) more environmentally friendly.

Reduction of air emissions

Since 2006, air emissions have been reduced by 45% particularly those related to SO2 by the establishment of an environmental action plan responding to the economic and environmental challenges, through the promotion of energy efficiency, energy saving and reduction of air emissions.

The actions implemented are as follows:

Improved processes to recover and reuse the heat,

Improved  installations to limit heat loss,

Introduction of new technologies to improve the energy efficiency of combustion plants

Monitoring air quality

SAMIR devotes particular attention to the monitoring and the characterization of air quality through periodic analysis carried out by a qualified external laboratory.

This monitoring is to measure the meteorological parameters and the main air pollutants, namely sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen oxides (Nox) and Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM).

The results of the surveys  carried out since 2006 showed that the concentrations measured are all below the threshold limits fixed by Moroccan standards on ambient air quality.

Development and production of clean fuels

The modernization of  Mohammedia refinery involved an environmental impact study, that  evaluated all  environmental aspects linked to the project. The latter allowed on one hand, compliance with international standards (OMS, World Bank…) in terms of rejection and environmental management  and on the other hand  the production of clean petroleum products of high quality (Gasoil 50ppm and 10ppm and Unleaded Petrol), with the aim of improving the quality of ambient air especially in large cities.

We strive to optimise our water and energy consumption and improve the quality of releases. We also aspire to strengthen our prevention systems and fight against maritime pollution.

Optimizing water consumption

SAMIR has set up an ambitious goal of reducing its water consumption by 25% by implementing several measures:

-   Increased vigilance on accidental  losses,

-   Introduction of closed cooling circuits,

-   Maximum steam condensate recuperation,

-   Raising awareness amongst users on the financial and environmental consequences of leaks,

-   Systematic audits of the facilities; Maximum use of ground water from wells when possible

Also, the introduction of closed cooling circuits of osmosis water from the reverse osmosis seawater desalination planned modernization in Mohammedia new refinery units  allowed a saving of 180 m3 / h of drinking water (which is equivalent to the average consumption of a town of 50,000 inhabitants).

Sustainable development: Let’s live differently

Contribution to sustainable development

Reconciling  economic constraints with environmental and social considerations is the major challenge of SAMIR to prepare a sustainable energy for the future.

Pillar of the national economy, SAMIR’s mission is to provide, in the best economic conditions, a reliable and sustainable high-quality products in compliance with environmental and social requirements.

As a socially responsible company, SAMIR must achieve a remarkable level of excellence in its activities and operations while integrating the three main axis of sustainable development: Economy, Environment, and Society.

Economy

The required energy to achieve sustainable development

Sustainable development involves the exploitation of natural resources at a rate that does not cause exhaustion, but rather helps  maintain the biological  productivity of the biosphere. This form of economic development would respect the environment through a rational and moderate use of natural resources.

Preparing for the future of energy

Aware of the need to prepare a favorable energy future which will participate in its  own  development, SAMIR gives particular attention to the rational use of energy by implementing and identifying project opportunities to improve energy efficiency and promote renewable energy, through the development of new sources of ecological and sustainable energy such as wind energy and biofuels.

Environment

We try constantly to conduct our activities in an environmentally sustainable way by the use of new technologies, rational use of energy and optimization of natural resources having for objective to reduce our emissions and to implement environmental management programs to help us achieve this.

Society

SAMIR exercises its activitiy as a socially responsible company in total harmony with sustainable development principles. It strives to work for the public good and on general interest issue

In addition to managing the environment impacts of its activities and operations, SAMIR’s endeavour, to increase in value all of the company stakeholders (suppliers, customers, shareholders, employees….etc), can not be ignored.
